As the Russia-Ukraine war enters its 927th day, these are the main developments.
Here is the situation on Monday, September 9, 2024.
Fighting
- At least three people have died and a person is injured when Russia hit the village of Cherkaske in eastern Donetsk region with cluster munitions, said Governor Vadym Filashkin.
- Two civilians have died and four residents are injured, including two children, amid a Russian air strike on the Sumy region, according to the regional military administration. Sumy borders Russia in northeastern Ukraine.
- The death toll from the missile attack on a military educational institute in the city of Poltava, Ukraine has increased with three people dying from injuries to 58 people.
- Russia said it had taken Novohrodivka some 12km from Pokrovsk. Novohrodivka had a pre-war population of 14,000 people.
- In its regular update, the General Staff of the Ukrainian military detailed heavy fighting across the whole Pokrovsk sector, including Novohrodivka. It said 29 attempted Russian attacks had been repelled, with seven battles still ongoing.

- Ukraine’s Air Force said that air defense troops destroyed 15 of 23 Russian attack drones and one guided air missile. The Air Force reported that two drones and three additional missiles failed to reach their targets.
- Romania and Latvia said they were investigating breaches of their airspace by Russian drones which then crashed. NATO Deputy Secretary-General Mircea Geoana, a fellow NATO member and Ukraine ally, described the acts as “irresponsible and potentially dangerous”.

- German Chancellor Olaf Scholz urged fresh diplomatic efforts to bring about peace in Ukraine “more quickly.”
- In an interview with broadcaster ZDF, Scholz said he and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had agreed in recent talks that a new peace conference, also including Russia, was needed.
- According to a statement posted on the president’s website, Zelenskyy has named Oleksandr Kamyshin, former minister of armaments production, as a third-party adviser on strategic issues. Kamyshin has resigned as minister for strategic industries in the big government reshuffle.
Weapons
Zelenskyy also reiterated his call for Ukraine’s allies to waive any caveats placed on the use of the modern Western armaments to strike against targets within Russia proper. “In just one week, Russia has used more than 800 guided aerial bombs, close to 300 Shahed drones, and more than 60 missiles of various types against our people,” he said in a Facebook post.
