Romania Calls for NATO Action Against Russian Air Space Violations

Amidst the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, Romania’s strategic location and military preparations have become crucial to NATO’s security interests in the region.

As the Russia-Ukraine war continues, Romania is intensifying its efforts to address ongoing Russian aggressions in the region.

The country has repeatedly called upon NATO to take decisive action against Russia for violating its airspace with missiles and drones.

  • Romania now seeks to persuade  NATO into taking action regarding the Russian missiles and drones breaching her air space.
  • Romanian Defense Minister Gabriel Oprea said his country was being blackmailed by Transdniester authorities while calling for “a strong, coordinated response” of the alliance.
  • It also gave a warning that it will increase ammunition procurement in response to attacks by Russia inside Ukraine.

According to the reports, the country continues to fortify its defenses with strategic steps as the Russia-Ukraine war continues and is now set to go full-throttle on ammunition procurement and on calling upon NATO to take action against Russia for breaching Romania’s airspace.

The Euractiv reportedly quoted the Supreme Council of National Defence (CSAT), which said it was forced to review and fine-tune military acquisition procedures to strengthen its defense capabilities due to Russia’s aggressive moves in the region.

The CSAT said in a statement that changes would include “the increased acquisition of combat ammunition and the gradual build-up of strategic reserves,” Euractiv writes.

It follows Romanian Defense Minister Angel Tîlvăr urged NATO to execute “robust, coordinated” responses to Russian missile and drone incursions into Romania’s airspace.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday, Tîlvăr said: “B9 states are deeply concerned by the repeated incursions of Russia’s drones and missiles in air space, in Poland, Romania, Latvia and rising tensions along NATO’s eastern flank.”.

That is why a robust, coordinated response on an allied level is needed as well as enforcing the rotational air defence and integrated anti-missile model as soon as possible, he added.

The B9, or Bucharest Nine, group was established in response to the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014. The group consists of Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia.

Russian drones have frequently violated Romanian airspace over the past twelve months.

Romanian authorities said earlier this month they were investigating after a Russian drone crashed after breaching its airspace.

NATO’s Role in Addressing the Crisis

Former NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana commented on the news. He said NATO condemned “the overnight Russian airspace violation into Romanian airspace.”

“While we have no information indicating an intentional attack by Russia against Allies, these acts are irresponsible and potentially dangerous,” he added.

The B9 countries say the need to strengthen European air defenses was stated in a communiqué issued earlier this week.

“We need a collective answer to challenges posed by modern weapons and technologies, including through boosting our capabilities of detecting, identifying and, if necessary, engaging low and slow flying objects,” the statement said, quoted by Romanian news agency Agerpres.

Romania’s strategic position – bordering Ukraine and along the shores of the Black Sea puts it in an important position for NATO forces.

Mihail Kogălniceanu air base will be the biggest in Europe in terms of the alliance.

Major development: The base can reportedly accommodate up to 10,000 personnel and their respective families of NATO.

Final Words

Romania’s escalating concerns over Russian aggression have highlighted the need for a coordinated international response. As the country continues to strengthen its military capabilities and call upon for support, the future implications of these developments for regional and global security remain to be seen.
